Social Networking to TV
OK, so vuzu launches this evening, and for the first time in South Africa (and possibly globally to my knowledge) we will be showcasing social network activity on TV. Not UGC uploads, as every news channel worth their salt are doing that now, but actual network activity – "Bob has joined the network", "Pete is now friends with Sally", "Megan rated the new episode of Lost", "Jim updated his status to 'Looking forward to the U2 concert in August'" etc etc etc.
The development team is also expanding quite nicely – our new senior developer started today, and I’m expecting big things from him. I noticed a sigh of relief out of my two current dev’s when I told them that we had a new member on our team. Should help to ease the pressure a little. Have also managed to recruit another developer – he should be joining us in early August.
We will need the extra hands too, as the next phase of the project will involve re-writing a chunk of the existing social networking functionality that underpins most of our entertainment sites. The current technology is 3 years old, some of the functionality is quite clunky and the interface is less than ideal. In fact, I was told the other day that the User Interface is far from world-class – something we are hoping to change in the coming months.
