Designing for Socially Intense sites

One of the challenges for web2.0 and "socially intense" websites, is how to create a really compelling offering that is easy to use, encourages interaction, and builds community. Joshua Porter's presentation below (sent to me by a colleague) provides some great insight into three of the biggest problems facing web designers and developers today:

1). The Sign Up Problem: how to get people motivated enough to sign up and give it a try.

2). The First Time Use Problem: once signed up, how do you get them started without having to read through FAQ's and demo's.

3). The Ongoing Engagement Problem: the more users and interactions, the better the service - but how do you get to that point in the first place.
